Sox Twitter / "Your Hero Tonight!" Awards 2020

Thought I'd put together a nice little best of list for the salt of the earth users/not bots/Italian beef ingredients that make up White Sox Twitter. Since we weren’t able to stop by 108 on a Dollar Dog Wednesday, see Fan From 1962 off on the Rock Island, or like something ChiSoxMike said, not because we agreed with it, but because it made us feel better, we took to Twitter this season. (Actually, wait, nothing changed for us and ChiSoxMike this year.)

Better explain it with the first award, from @Wh_Sox_Mike24:

“Best SoxTwitter Explanation in a Gif or Video Clip”

https://twitter.com/Wh_Sox_Mike24/status/1290333095518801920?s=20

"THESE are my people!"

Next, let’s go to the worst weekend of the year, a botched 7 inning doubleheader against the Covid Cards. @Go_GoSox was there to talk us off the ledge:

“Best Laugh After a Bad Start”

https://twitter.com/Go_GoSox/status/1294771833716248576?s=20

We also had to suffer through Angel Hernandez on several occasions this season. Your winner for reporting this nonsense is @whatdeloatch:

“Best Bring On The Robot Umps Stance”

https://twitter.com/whatdeloatch/status/1310352649976459266?s=20

But despite all this we had some great games this year, the most fun of which came from Wrigley Field on a Friday night in a 10-1 win. This had a lot of contenders, but here we have @AJEarley4 going so far beyond the line he can’t even see it behind him:
“Best Beating the Cubs Recap”

https://twitter.com/AJEarley4/status/1310019773774934016?s=20

We also had @MySoxSummer recounting simpler, happier times at the Friendly Confines. These bastards caught Pearl Jam’s Saturday show while I had to wait out the rain at the Monday show! And they got Hail, Hail! I’ll pick better next time @MySoxSummer and @BigSexxy_75

“Best Explanation of How Wrigley Keeps the Grass Green”

https://twitter.com/MySoxSummer/status/1296968193928503304?s=20

One of the best games this year came in Lucas Giolito’s no-hitter. Equally historic was the Twilight Zone-esque cutaway from the middle of gameplay to several minutes straight of celebrities doing anti-online harassment ads. While everyone else ferociously tweeted at NBC Sports Chicago to see if the IT Intern was on his way to the Park (“Shit! Forgot my mask!”), here we have @YinkaDoubleDare and @davelevora in a tie for:

“Best Historical Narratives of the Great NBC Sports Blackout of 2020”

https://twitter.com/YinkaDoubleDare/status/1298421031166779394?s=20

https://twitter.com/davelevora/status/1298424339268861952?s=20

Let’s also pour another one out for @MySoxSummer who let us know the only sad fact about that day:
“Best Harsh Reality of 2020 Recap”

https://twitter.com/MySoxSummer/status/1298449284078149637?s=20

But even this was less hard to swallow than what @ChiBerk96 had to go through. After losing a bet to Cincinnati Reds fan girlfriend @kd_cunningham, Matt had to chug a pint glass of Ohio delicacy Skyline chili. I want to say if Katie lost the punishment was just a shot of Malort? Basically a Chicago flu shot. Here’s hoping Matt makes better bets in 2021.

“Best Should’ve Thought This Through More Moment”

https://twitter.com/kd_cunningham/status/1307829416538640384

And while on things people should’ve thought through more, let’s talk Eloy’s defense. We also can’t have a Sox Twitter awards without recognizing the great @tom_paints. Let’s use both for this award on a Tom painting that wasn’t a painting

“Best Tom Paints Painting that Tom Paints Painted (Not a Painting)”

https://twitter.com/tom_paints/status/1293635467427028992?s=20

The regular season began to wind down, which means one thing… roster call ups! Well, a lot of things, but not really much else besides roster call ups if you’ve been a fan for a while. Here we have noted farm system expert @MrDelicious13 with his comprehensive scouting report on Garrett Crochet. Oh heavens Beefloaf!

“Best Prospect Review”

https://twitter.com/MrDelicious13/status/1308930143034003459

As the season winds down, also, comes our breaking point with commercials, with one notable exception to come later. I was torn between “Tom Time” and the “Bing Bang Bong” for worst constantly replayed advertisement, but it’s really the latter that still haunts my dream and gets stuck in my head just by writing about it.

Your runner up to the “Best Coping Joke for a Commercial Played Way Too Many Times” comes again from @AJEarley4

https://twitter.com/AJEarley4/status/1307494649012068352?s=20

But your winner with the masterful writing is an AJ by a different name. Sing it with me @AirTrafficAJ!

“Best Coping Joke for a Commercial Played Way Too Many Times”

https://twitter.com/AirTrafficAJ/status/1301713581688475649?s=20

A tune that never gets old is our dearest TV companions singing the Nationwide jingle. Take it away @WhiteSox_Jack!

“Best Jason Benetti and Stoney Reaction Tweet”

https://twitter.com/WhiteSox_Jack/status/1300150672772521988?s=20

Now I ran a thing most Fridays where people would guess who would hit the first home run of the night. Despite that I didn’t really plan on giving an award for someone who called an event in a game this year. But this prediction from @RegionRat14 was pretty damn impressive- you earned this one my guy.

“Best I Called It Moment”

https://twitter.com/RegionRat14/status/1305711647877746690?s=20

The news didn’t stop when the season ended. After losing Game 3 in very controversial fashion by attempting an “everything needs to go right” reliever rotation, Ricky Renteria was eventually let go as manager. I’m sure I know what @jamjrtweet thinks about that!

“Best Chirp of the Manager”

https://twitter.com/jamjrtweet/status/1309297002283442176?s=20

One of those 7.5 billion people is Tony La Russa, which Sox Twitter had really no opinions on and took largely in stride. KIDDING we all went absolutely mental. Unless your name is Ken Wo you probably came with a dissenting opinion or a DUI joke. The best take on the La Russa hire came from the queen herself, @LWilz, who also tied in this Bears season:

“Best Take on the La Russa Hire”

https://twitter.com/LWilz/status/1328556125109760000

Let’s also keep her on stage for this additional award:

“Best Comment on an ex-White Sox”

Sass n titties. 4eva.

Thanks Sox Twitter for keeping things fun, chirpy, sexy, sarcastic, and belly laugh worthy in 2020. I’ll see you at the Bullpen Bar at some point dammit! Let’s leave you with Joliet’s finest, Mr. Fan since 1962, @mares92J, for what it’s like to be a Sox fan these days in a 30 second clip:

“Best Tweet of the Year”

https://twitter.com/mares62J/status/1290830738720530433?s=20
